The framework of the web science

On Tuesday 6 May 2008 the new initiative of Tim Berners-Lee, the man who invented the Web, regarding the framework of the science of the Web, fifteen years after its creation, was presented at the “Tholos”. The event was organized following an initiative of the e-business forum and the Foundation of the Hellenic World.

Official guests of this year’s event were the primary associates of Mr. Tim Berners-Lee, the professor and vice president of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) Ms Wendy Hall and professor Mr. Nigel Shadbolt.

Nowadays, the number of the users of the Web exceeds one billion and it is impossible to estimate the direct and indirect advantages that result from its use. The science of the Web undertakes to study the technological, social and economic dimensions of this transition and to formulate the strategic proposals for its utilization to the benefit of science and society in general. In the future, the science of the Web is expected to play a connective role among sciences, such as Mathematics, Information Science, Economics, Law, Mass Media, Psychology, Biology, Social Anthropology, creating an inter-scientific field of analysis.

The event was attended by a great number of students from the Universities of Patras and Athens, as well as from the Panteion University of Athens, but also by several professors of Greek universities.
